EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
