The Premier Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Premier Place.

Initially, this work might appear closer to a challenging academic quiz than the latest popular music album by a musician who just had a last single featured a global pop star. Divided across four distinct movements and sung in thirteen tongues, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystery, religious ascent, and physical change, frequently through the lens of various saintly figures. The end of a romance—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is shot upwards on this record, supported by the constant sound of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem quite small.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape dry academic chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, with sole praise belonging to the artist. While it's not the first time project to blend the past with modern styles, its scale feel far greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. What really raises her fourth album, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and engrained drama, is a core spirit of joy. Much like the iconic Björk at her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts apart, you still desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines clearly on the stirring Italian song about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls away, and we hear a gleeful giggle followed by a comment before a comically over-the-top string crescendo crashes in like cartoonish impact. The track immediately segues to the wild single featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than Björk.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never quite know—nor want to know—where it will go next."

Almost each track ends at a totally distinct point than where it began. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of fame with a delicate symphony only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic style begins out moody and brooding, with menacing vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

A key balancing act of Lux involves navigating the gap between bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become her first work to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track performed primarily in English builds on a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spins skyward. This feat is repeated by a different expansive track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its inherent excess. This is a deep well of buried treasure that requires time to fully mine but never feels like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day musical from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
